Gorbachev and PerestroikaMikhail Gorbachev is the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union during his leadership is engulfed in a multitude of problems. Russia was slowly falling apart and it was his job to fix it. He created this program of perestroika, or restructuring. This program swept across the European Nations and brought an end to the Cold War. His actions also led to the end of the Soviet Union which separated into 15 smaller republics.

The reunification of Germany and Europe was a powerful symbol of the end of the war.
